What is Chronic Pain?
Chronic pain is simply pain that lasts beyond the normal recovery period. In other words, chronic pain comes in to play when the normal pain from an injury or condition does not subside. It is possible there may not be an identifiable physical cause for the persistent pain. Chronic pain can range from mild, annoying pain to severe pain that interferes with your mood and ability to function.
Chronic pain is generally different from acute pain. Acute pain signals are due to actual or impending tissue damage that normally subsides after the injury that caused it. Chronic pain is usually defined as pain that lasts longer than three months. This three-month interval is normally long enough for acute pain to ease completely.
Although back pain is one of the most widespread and costliest conditions in the country, chronic pain is far more reaching. Headaches, RSD, Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and many others all fall in the category of chronic pain.
